An Introduction To Origami the Japanese Art Of Folding Paper

Origami: A thousand year old art form traditionally used for ceremony. In this demonstration you will learn of some of the basic forms and folding techniques used to create hundreds of characters in this beautiful art form. Also presented will be some of the arts history and background along with opportunity for hands on participation and further instruction. Included will be a display of characters and examples of traditional folding patterns. This beautiful art is enjoyed by young and old alike.

Public and Private Origami Demonstrations
Thirty minute program

Display: Will include many of the Origami books that are on the market. Examples of several of the accepted forms of Origami ie. traditional single sheet models, multi sheet compounds, and examples of modular Origami.

Performance: A walk through the history and development of Origami through the centuries. Having it's origins in China it spread east, to the Japanese who brought Origami out of traditional models into everyday use. West to the Islamic world and the pure geometry of modular Origami and repeating patterns. Origami has existed for more than a thousand years, yet few ever get to see the beauty of the creation of a three dimensional model carefully crafted from a flat piece of paper.

Classroom Origami Demonstrations
Fifteen, thirty, or fourty five minute program:

Display: Will include Origami books that are on the market. Examples of several of the accepted forms of Origami ie. traditional single sheet models, multi sheet compounds, and examples of modular Origami.

Performance: A walk through the history and development of Origami through the centuries. An introduction to the symbols and patterns that are the basis of the art, and an introduction to some of the folding techniques that have taken years to master. the children will be given a pre-folded piece of paper and then will be taken throu the steps to create a traditional butterfly. Origami has existed for more than a thousand years, yet few ever get to see the beauty of the finished three dimensional models carefully crafted from a flat piece of paper.
